What Is Vibe Coding? A Plain-English Explanation
Vibe coding means building software by describing it to an AI. Learn where the term came from, how it works, what you can build, and where it breaks.
Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want in plain English and letting an AI write the code. You steer by looking at what it made and asking for changes, rather than by reading and writing the code yourself.
That's the short version. The longer version matters, because the phrase gets used for three different things, and mixing them up is where most of the confusion (and most of the arguments) come from.
Where the term came from
The phrase was coined by Andrej Karpathy, a well-known AI researcher, in early 2025. He described a way of working where you "fully give in to the vibes", talk to the AI, accept what it produces, and mostly stop reading the code. If something breaks, you paste the error back in and see what happens.
It was half joke, half honest description of how a lot of people were already working. It stuck because it named something real: for the first time, a person with no programming background could describe an app and get a working one back within minutes.
What it looks like in practice
A typical vibe coding session goes like this:
- You open a tool such as Lovable, Bolt, Replit, Cursor or Claude Code.
- You type something like "build a booking page where customers pick a time slot and I get an email".
- The AI generates the project and shows you a live preview.
- You click around, notice what's wrong, and describe the fix.
- Repeat until it does what you wanted.
You never had to know what a component is, how a database table is defined, or what the build step does. The tool handled it.
Three things people mean by "vibe coding"
This is the part most explainers skip.
1. Prompting an app into existence. A non-coder uses a builder like Lovable to produce something real. This is the original meaning and the one most people picture.
2. AI-assisted engineering. A professional developer uses AI heavily, but reads and reviews the output and understands the system. Some people call this vibe coding too, but it's closer to ordinary software engineering with a very fast assistant.
3. Throwaway software. Quick scripts, personal tools and prototypes where nobody cares much if the code is messy. Vibe coding is at its best here.
The debate about whether vibe coding is "good" or "dangerous" usually comes down to which of these three people are talking about. Building a personal budgeting tool this way is fine. Building something that holds other people's data without understanding it is where things go wrong, which we get into in is vibe coding bad?.
What you can realistically build
Without any coding background, people routinely ship:
- Landing pages and marketing sites
- Internal tools and dashboards
- Simple SaaS prototypes with sign-in and a database
- Browser extensions and small utilities
- Early versions of products to test with real users
What's harder is anything with complicated rules, heavy traffic, payments handled carefully, or sensitive data. You can still do those, but you need more understanding, not less.
Where vibe coding breaks down
The same few problems show up again and again.
The day-three wall. The first day is magic. Then the app grows, the AI loses track of how the pieces fit, fixes start breaking other things, and you can't tell why. We cover this in vibe coding for beginners.
Security you can't see. An app can look finished while leaving your database open to anyone. Nothing in the preview tells you. The Lovable security checklist and our guide to Supabase Row Level Security cover the most common holes.
Debugging without understanding. If you don't know how the app works, you can only describe symptoms. That's slow, and it burns credits or time.
Hidden costs. Credits, hosting and backend usage add up. Our breakdown of Lovable pricing shows how fast.
Do you need to know how to code?
No, to start. Yes, a little, to finish.
You don't need syntax, algorithms or a computer science background. You do need a basic mental model: where your data lives, what runs in the browser versus on a server, and who is allowed to see what. That's a much smaller body of knowledge than a degree, and it's the difference between a demo and a product.
The people who do best treat the AI like a very fast junior developer. It writes plenty of code, and someone still has to decide what to build and check that it's right.
How to get started
- Pick one tool. If you're brand new, a browser builder is the gentlest start. Our guide to the best vibe coding tools matches tools to experience level.
- Start with something small and real. A tool you'd actually use beats a tutorial project.
- Plan before you prompt. Know your screens, your data and your rules.
- Change one thing, then test it. Small steps are easy to undo.
- Learn just enough to stay in control. The practices that still work on day 30 are a good next read.
Frequently asked questions
What does vibe coding mean? Building software by describing what you want to an AI and steering the result, instead of writing the code yourself.
Who invented vibe coding? The term was coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025.
Is vibe coding the same as no-code? Not quite. No-code tools use visual blocks and fixed templates. Vibe coding produces real code from a text description, which gives you more flexibility but also more to understand.
Is vibe coding real programming? It produces real software, but the skill is different. You're directing and reviewing rather than typing every line. Understanding what the code does still matters.
Can I make money with vibe coding? Yes, people sell products built this way. The limiting factor tends to be your ability to debug, secure and maintain what you built, not the AI's ability to write it.
What's the best tool for vibe coding? It depends on your experience and what you're building. Lovable is a common first choice for non-coders, and Cursor or Claude Code suit people who want more control.
If you've tried vibe coding and hit the wall, that's the gap VibeMastery was built to close. It teaches the fundamentals the AI skips, so you can keep going past day three.
